A circular co-workspace
A long solid wooden oak meeting table with matching Bok dining chairs fills the meeting room of event and co-workspace Plein Publiek in the south of Antwerp. In the corner, there’s a lounge area with the Ellipse sofa and two coffee tables, and a soft Kilim rug. The atmosphere is warm and homely, but at the same time professional. “The table has built-in sockets, it was specially designed for our professional market”, says Prisca (co-founder of Live Light).
That there is furniture from Live Light at Plein Publiek is thanks to Nelson Donck, one of the co-founders of Plein Publiek.
“Our buildings are at Blue Gate Antwerp, Antwerp’s first eco-effective, water-bound business park. We try to be as sustainable and energy neutral as possible. Live Light fits in perfectly with that. For us, it is much more interesting to rent furniture than to buy it anyway. We also want to use this space as a showcase model for other companies that come here for meetings. That way, they will get to know the concept of renting furniture.”

A knowledge centre for circular economy
Plein Publiek saw the light of day in 2015, back then, they were housed in the “Fierensblokken” in the South of Antwerp. In 2018, the event venue moved for the first time, to the site behind the courthouse on New South to find a new home at the Blue Gate business park.
The climate-neutral business park is reserved for innovative companies with a clear ambition: linear growth thanks to circular work. Start-ups and co-workers can rent a workspace in one of the containers. “We want to grow even more than before into a knowledge centre for circular economy”, Nelson says. The containers will not only house entrepreneurs from this circular knowledge economy but also a co-working space and an expertise centre in the field of sustainability and circularity. In that expertise centre, start-ups will be able to receive guidance on sustainable innovation.
And of course, Plein Publiek remains an event venue where visitors can go for presentations, afterworks, parties and even attend one of their Loop Impact events: within one of the containers, a new organisation with a focus on circularity will soon make its appearance. Among other things, Loop Impact will organise actions (networking) events and training on sustainable entrepreneurship.
